Copa Blubber

A southern elephant seal drifted all the way north to Rio and lay down on Copacabana beach. Crowds came; lifeguards put up a cordon. Everyone wants to visit Copacabana, even the elephant seal.

His trip up the coast

Back to the sand

Where he started is a guess; the experts quoted only said "probably" and "some speculate". The map is simplified, and the two Rio beaches are pulled apart so you can tap both: São Conrado is just west of Copacabana.

Purple Flag

Back to the sand

You're the lifeguard on duty, and he's asleep inside the purple rope. People who stop at the rope for a photo are fine. Anyone who crosses it (and any loose dog) needs a whistle: run close and press Space. Too many people too close and he'll wake up, huff and swim off. Keep him asleep for 90 seconds.

How big is a big male?

Back to the sand

Southern elephant seals are the biggest seals there are, and males are several times heavier than females. These are rough figures for a big adult male; the size of the Copacabana seal was not reported.
